नासिक जिला महाराष्ट्र के उत्तर-पश्चिमी भाग में 18.33 से 20.53 डिग्री उत्तरी अक्षांश के बीच और समुद्र तल से 56 565 मीटर की ऊँचाई पर 75.16 डिग्री और पूर्वी रेखा के बीच 16 डिग्री पूर्व में स्थित है. जिले की एक पौराणिक पृष्ठभूमि है. वनवास में, भगवान राम पंचवटी में रहते थे. अग्नि अगस्त्य तपस्या के लिए नासिक में रुके थे. गोदावरी नदी नासिक में त्र्यंबकेश्वर से निकलती है. त्र्यंबकेश्वर शिव मंदिर त्र्यंबक में स्थित है. यह महाराष्ट्र के त्र्यंबकेश्वर में हिंदू राजवंश में पंजीकृत बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है. गोदावरी नदी का स्रोत त्र्यंबकेश्वर में है.

नासिक का मूल नाम रामायण महाकाव्य से जुड़ा है. इस महाकाव्य के अनुसार, लक्ष्मण ने रावण की बहन शूर्पणखा की नाक काट दी। इसी कारण इस स्थान को ‘नासिक’ नाम मिला. महाराष्ट्र सरकार ने इसे नासिक में बदल दिया संस्कृत शब्द शिखा का अर्थ है पर्वत उसी से ‘नव शिखा’ नासिक बना. नासिक शहर और इसके वातावरण को प्राचीन काल से विभिन्न नामों से जाना जाता है.

इस क्षेत्र के पाँच नाम थे – जनस्थान, त्रिकांतका, गुलशनबाद, नासिक और वर्तमान दिन नासिक. अनादिकाल से नासिक को एक धार्मिक स्थान माना जाता रहा है. रामायण में उल्लेख है कि श्रीराम नासिक क्षेत्र में पंचवटी में रह रहे थे. इस बारे में दो मिथक हैं कि शहर को “नासिक” नाम कैसे मिला. नाम है “नवसिख” और बाद में नासिक और “नौ चोटियों का शहर” नामक राय की एक धारा है.

इसके अलावा, एक और संदर्भ रामायण का है. जबकि राम, उनकी पत्नी सीता और भाई लक्ष्मण नासिक के पंचवटी क्षेत्र में रह रहे थे, लक्ष्मण ने रावण की बहन शूर्पनखा (संस्कृत में ‘नासिका’) की नाक काट दी, कहा जाता है कि नासिक या नासिक को इसका नाम मिला. यह प्रतिक्रिया अधिक प्रचलित है. नासिक नाम इस तथ्य से आया होगा कि नासिक के पहाड़ सह्याद्रि के नासिक की तरह दिखते हैं.

अंबेडकर आंदोलन का मुख्य केंद्र नासिक है. दादासाहेब गायकवाड़ का जन्म इसी देश में हुआ था. सिंहस्थ कुंभ मेला भारत के चार कुंभ मेलों में से एक है. हर 12 साल में यहां कुंभ मेला लगता है. गोदावरी नदी के मंदिर और घाट यहाँ प्रसिद्ध हैं. इ.एस.ई.एस. लगभग 1200, वे पांडवों द्वारा खुदाई की गई है. नासिक में, गोदावरी नदी को दक्षिण गंगा कहा जाता है.
